Operating Engineers Local 4 represents more than 5,000 heavy equipment operators, mechanics, surveyors, equipment house employees, wastewater technicians, and apprentices throughout Eastern Massachusetts, Eastern New Hampshire, and the state of Maine. Because of our commitment to safety, high standards, and state-of-the-art skills training, we ensure that our members bring the highest level of competency to every job site.

Our members are currently employed on hundreds of job sites across the region. The most visible Operating Engineers operate and maintain heavy construction equipment such as cranes, front-end loaders, excavators, backhoes, and forklifts. Behind the scenes, operating engineers work in site survey, quarries, and equipment houses.

At the heart of Local 4’s success is our highly reputed four-year apprenticeship training program. The curriculum prepares operating engineers — both on the job and in the classroom — to be highly skilled, conscientious, safety-conscious, dependable, and physically capable of demanding work conditions.

Contractors and end users can be confident they are getting the best-trained workers in the industry.
